    Welcome to 2012

Happy New Year and welcome to 2012. At Middleton Grange School, we are already preparing for the start of classes for current students on Tuesday January 31 and orientation for new students on Monday January 30th. The summer weather is warm and we were pleased to note that Lonely Planet Travel Guide has recently written that “Christchurch is re-emerging as one of NZ’s most exciting cities. I hope that we might have the opportunity to meet you here in Christchurch sometime during 2012.

Support for Middleton Grange from our Japanese Friends

With humble gratitude, our school recently received a gift from the Hello Institute in Fukui Matsumoto, Japan. This school has sent pupils to Middleton Grange International College in past years and we were pleased to welcome the Hello Institute Director, Ms Kimie Otani, who personally delivered the donation. (Pictured with Mr Vanderpyl and Mr Scott).

Middleton Grange will use this gift to bless school families who are facing hardship as a result of the earthquake and also for some school environment improvements.

Middleton Grange International College in Queenstown

At 9:00am on Wednesday 27th April, 9 staff and 47 pupils left school for a trip down to Queenstown. Although it was
a long bus trip, we broke the journey with stops at Geraldine for morning tea and Lake Tekapo for a visit to the Church
of the Good Shepherd and lunch. The next stop was at Mrs Jones’ fruit stall just outside Cromwell, where we enjoyed ice
creams, dried fruit products and wonderful fresh fruit. We then started the final leg to Pinewood Lodge in Queenstown. The next morning started with breakfast in the dining hall after which we all headed off for fun activities.

    Cooperation agreement with Korean school

Coinciding with the English programme for 15 pupils from Korea, we recently welcomed Sister Son, the Principal of St Paul Girls’ High School. During her visit, a formal Memorandum of Understanding was signed that will lead to similar programmes for the next three years and open up further opportunities for pupils of both schools in the future. We have been tremendously impressed with the calibre and character of the visiting pupils and we are excited that this school has been so impressed with Middleton Grange that they are committing to a partnership for the future.

    Performing Arts update

Stage 2 of the Performing Arts Centre was ready for occupation at the beginning of Term 1 this year. The Music Department is completely in its new facility as is the Maori Department and Humanities occupy most of the first floor.

Drama is still working under difficult conditions but the end is in sight. Once the main contractor has completed his work around the end of March there will still be a lot of work to do to complete the stage fit out.

An official opening of the completed building is timed for early in term 2.
